Abu Dhabi International Airport expansion
Operated by Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), Abu Dhabi International Airport is the second largest airport in the UAE.
Located 32km from the heart of Abu Dhabi city, the airport is built over an area of 350,000 square metre. The airport’s perpetual expansion program has completed its 4.1 kilometres long and 60 meters wide second runway in 2008. In addition, ADAC opened the new Terminal 3 of Abu Dhabi International Airport in the first quarter of 2009 that has increased the airport’s overall annual passenger capacity to 12 million passengers. To meet further growing demand, ADAC has begun development work on a major new passenger terminal.
In January 2009, Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the Middle East region and a select number of airports in the world to receive regulatory approval for enhanced low visibility operations.
The airport has achieved record passenger traffic of 9.02 million passengers in 2008, up by 30.2 per cent from 6.9 million passengers in 2007.
